DSTU 8782:2018 — Ballistic Protection
DSTU 8782:2018 is the Ukrainian national ballistic-protection standard that defines body-armor classes by their resistance to bullets and fragments. The Vartoviy K9 dog body armor is certified to Class 1 of DSTU 8782:2018: the UHMWPE protective panel stops 9×18 PM/APS and 9×19 Luger pistol rounds, and anti-fragment resistance is confirmed by the STANAG 2920 method (the V50 figure). The standard is adopted by Ukraine, so it is the legally correct benchmark for the Ukrainian market. The international NIJ standard (USA) is given only for education and comparison — our product is officially tested to DSTU, not NIJ. Below we explain what Class 1 means, what the panel actually protects against, what UHMWPE is, how to read the marking and how the Ukrainian standard differs from NIJ.
What Class 1 of DSTU 8782:2018 means
DSTU 8782:2018 divides personal body armor into classes by the type of ammunition the panel can stop without through-penetration. Class 1 is protection against the most common pistol threat.
- 9×18 mm PM/APS — the round of the Makarov pistol and the Stechkin automatic pistol.
- 9×19 mm Luger (Parabellum) — a common round for pistols and submachine guns.
- Anti-fragment protection — fragment resistance is assessed by the STANAG 2920 method via the V50 figure.
Class 1 is aimed at protecting a working dog from pistol fire and secondary fragments while staying light and flexible for the animal's work.
What the panel protects against: bullets and fragments
The ballistic panel of the Vartoviy K9 body armor is made of UHMWPE. It is rated for:
| Threat | Description | Assessment method |
|---|---|---|
| 9×18 PM/APS | Pistol bullet | DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1 |
| 9×19 Luger | Pistol bullet | DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1 |
| Fragments | Fragmentation threat | STANAG 2920 (V50) |
The V50 figure is the fragment speed at which the probability of penetration is 50%. The higher the V50, the better the panel holds fragments. Protection is modular: chest, back with sides, belly and optionally the neck.
What UHMWPE is
UHMWPE is ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It is a synthetic fiber with a record strength-to-weight ratio, from which multilayer ballistic packs are formed.
- Low weight — the panel is lighter than a metal or ceramic one, which is critical for a dog.
- Does not absorb moisture — unlike some fabric materials, it keeps its properties in a wet environment.
- Flexibility — it follows the animal's anatomy well and doesn't restrict movement.
Thanks to UHMWPE, the finished product weighs only 2.4–2.8 kg depending on size and module configuration.
How to read the marking
On a certified product, the marking usually contains several key designations. Let's decode them:
- DSTU 8782:2018 — the number and adoption year of the Ukrainian standard.
- Class 1 — the level of ballistic resistance (ammunition type).
- Panel material — UHMWPE.
- STANAG 2920 / V50 — confirmation of anti-fragment properties.
If body armor has no reference to a specific standard and class, the real level of protection cannot be verified. That is why we openly state DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1.
DSTU vs NIJ: what's the difference
NIJ is the US ballistic-protection standard (National Institute of Justice). It is widely known worldwide, so we cite it solely for education and orientation. Our product is tested specifically to the Ukrainian DSTU 8782:2018.
| Aspect | DSTU 8782:2018 | NIJ (for reference) |
|---|---|---|
| Country | Ukraine | USA |
| Status for the UA market | Current national standard | Foreign benchmark |
| Classification | By classes (ammunition type) | By levels (Level IIA, II, IIIA…) |
Why DSTU is appropriate for the Ukrainian market: it is adopted in Ukraine, accounts for threats common here (in particular 9×18 ammunition) and is a correct basis for certifying a domestic manufacturer. FAQ
What does Class 1 body armor to DSTU 8782:2018 protect against?
Class 1 stops 9×18 PM/APS and 9×19 Luger pistol bullets without through-penetration of the panel, and also provides anti-fragment protection by the STANAG 2920 method (the V50 figure).
How does DSTU 8782:2018 differ from NIJ?
DSTU 8782:2018 is the current Ukrainian national standard our product is certified to. NIJ is the US standard, which we cite only for education and comparison. For the Ukrainian market, the legally correct benchmark is DSTU.
What is UHMWPE and why is it better?
UHMWPE is ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It is a light, strong ballistic fiber that doesn't absorb moisture and stays flexible, so the panel is comfortable for the dog and weighs only 2.4–2.8 kg.
How much does the body armor weigh?
Depending on size and module set, the weight is 2.4–2.8 kg. The design is modular: chest, back with sides, belly and optionally the neck.
Can the body armor be made for a specific dog?
Yes, the product is sewn to your animal's size. How to take measurements is described in detail in the guide how to measure a dog for body armor.
What is the warranty on the body armor?
The warranty is 12 months on the product and 3 years on the ballistic panel. Details on the terms are on the warranty page.
