Gear Materials
Vartoviy K9 gear is sewn from materials proven in tactical and rescue use. The base of all products is Cordura 500D fabric with abrasion resistance and water repellency. The body armor's ballistic protection is provided by a UHMWPE panel to DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1. The dog's comfort comes from a 3D Mesh lining with ventilation and an EVA cushion. The load is held by Duraflex and ITW Nexus hardware rated up to 800 kgf, while polyamide webbing and the MOLLE system add modularity. For work in the dark and on water we use 3M reflective material and SAR orange. Below we explain what these materials are, why they are needed and where they are used in our gear. Vartoviy K9 is a Ukrainian manufacturer, ФОП Славінська Тетяна Юріївна, Kyiv.
Cordura 500D — the base of the gear body
Cordura 500D is a strong nylon fabric with a density of 500 denier. The figure denotes the thread thickness: the higher it is, the greater the abrasion resistance. The fabric resists abrasion, tears and punctures, so it handles a dog's movement in the field, through bushes and on rubble well.
Cordura 500D has a water-repellent treatment, so water rolls off the surface and the gear dries faster. We use it in the body of the body armor, the tactical and the rescue harnesses. In the rescue harness the fabric is SAR orange for better visibility during search-and-rescue work.
UHMWPE — the body armor's ballistic panel
UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) is an ultralight, ultra-strong polymer used to make ballistic panels. It is lighter than water, yet able to stop bullets and fragments thanks to a dense pack of fibers that dissipates energy.
The Vartoviy K9 body-armor panel is made of UHMWPE and certified to DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1. It stops 9×18 PM/APS and 9×19 Luger bullets and also has anti-fragment protection to the STANAG 2920 standard (the V50 figure). The product weighs 2.4–2.8 kg. Read more about ballistics on the dog body armor page and in the article on the NIJ IIIA standard for dog body armor.
3D Mesh + EVA lining — comfort and ventilation
3D Mesh is a three-dimensional mesh fabric with air circulating between its layers. It draws away heat and sweat, so the dog overheats less during work. EVA is a porous foam polymer that absorbs impacts and distributes the load evenly across the body.
We use this pair in the inner lining of the tactical harness and in the cuffs of the leg-support straps. Thanks to it, the gear fits snugly but doesn't chafe.
Duraflex + ITW Nexus hardware and the MOLLE system
Duraflex and ITW Nexus are global makers of tactical buckles and fasteners. Their hardware in our tactical harness withstands loads up to 800 kgf, so the connection won't release under a jerk. Polyamide webbing distributes the pull and holds shape under the dog's weight.
MOLLE is a system of webbing rows onto which you attach extra pouches, first-aid kits or ID patches. The tactical harness provides 6 MOLLE rows. We explain exactly how to use it in the article on using the MOLLE system for K9.
3M reflective and SAR orange
3M reflective elements return the light of headlights or a torch back to the source, so the dog stays visible in the dark. In the rescue harness they are combined with SAR orange and a stainless-steel D-ring — which withstands loads up to 1200 kgf when lifting the animal.
Table: material → property → where used

| UHMWPE | Ballistic protection, low weight | Armor panel (DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1) |
| 3D Mesh + EVA | Ventilation, cushioning | Harness lining, leg-strap cuffs |
| Duraflex + ITW Nexus | Joint strength up to 800 kgf | Buckles and fasteners of the tactical harness |
| Polyamide webbing + MOLLE | Modularity, load distribution | Pouch attachment, 6 MOLLE rows |
| 3M reflective | Visibility in the dark | Rescue and tactical harnesses |
How to choose gear by materials
For patrol and service work, take products based on Cordura 500D — that's the tactical harness with a 3D Mesh lining and Duraflex hardware. For ballistic protection, choose body armor with a UHMWPE panel. The full range by purpose is gathered in the protection and tactical gear categories.
FAQ
Why is Cordura 500D better than ordinary nylon?
Cordura 500D has a thicker, stronger thread, higher resistance to abrasion and tearing, and a water-repellent treatment. So the gear keeps its shape longer and dries faster after rain or work on water.
What is UHMWPE and why are armor panels made of it?
UHMWPE is ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It is light yet very strong: a dense pack of fibers dissipates the energy of a bullet or fragment. Our panel is certified to DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1, and has a 3-year warranty.
What load does the hardware withstand?
The Duraflex and ITW Nexus buckles in the tactical harness withstand up to 800 kgf. The stainless-steel D-ring of the rescue harness is rated for 1200 kgf when lifting a dog.
Why is the 3D Mesh with EVA lining needed?
3D Mesh provides ventilation and draws away heat, while EVA absorbs impacts and distributes the load. Together they make wearing the gear comfortable and prevent chafing.
Can gear be sewn to the dog's size?
Yes. Vartoviy K9 body armor is made to size, the tactical harness comes in sizes S–XL (18–60 kg), and the rescue one in 4 sizes (12–65 kg). See measurement details in the article how to measure a dog for body armor.
