Free Talks "Dog Body Armor: Realities and Myths"
Vartoviy K9 holds free on-site talks "Dog Body Armor: Realities and Myths" for canine, rescue and military units. We come to your base or unit and explain in plain language what a service dog's body armor should really be: which protection class to choose, why the product's weight critically affects the animal's work and how to determine a safe wear time. All the information is based on scientific material research, the current DSTU 8782:2018 standard and our hands-on experience of tailoring and testing. The talks are free — so that as many units as possible make an informed protection choice, not one based on advertising promises.
What we cover in the talk
- Protection class. What Class 1 to DSTU 8782:2018 means, which threats it actually protects the dog from (9×18 PM/APS and 9×19 Luger bullets, fragments by the STANAG 2920 method) and why "NIJ IIIA" stickers from marketplaces guarantee nothing.
- Panel material. Why modern dog body armor is made of UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene), and how the material affects the product's weight and behavior.
- Product weight. Why weight is not a secondary spec but a key factor of working ability: a heavy vest tires the dog faster and raises the risk of overheating.
- Wear time. How task duration, temperature and the animal's physical condition affect how long it can really work in body armor, and why "wearing it all day" is a myth.
- Fit and measurements. Why protection works only when the product is sewn exactly to a specific dog's body, not picked from an S/M/L chart.
Realities and myths
Myth: "The thicker and heavier the vest, the better the protection." Reality: modern UHMWPE panels deliver the required protection class at a much lower weight, and excess weight only harms the dog.
Myth: "One size fits any shepherd." Reality: two dogs of the same weight can have chest girths differing by 10–15 cm, so protection is sewn to measurements.
Myth: "An NIJ certificate is a quality guarantee." Reality: for Ukraine the current standard is DSTU 8782:2018, and the real class is confirmed by testing in an accredited lab, not by a sticker.
Who it's for and how to book a talk

FAQ
Is the talk really free?
Yes. We don't charge for on-site talks — our goal is for units to make an informed choice of protection for dogs.
How long does the talk last?
Roughly one to one and a half hours, including answers to questions and a look at real gear samples.
Do you show real samples?
Yes, we bring body armor and other gear so you can assess the weight, design and fit in practice.
What is the information based on?
On scientific material research, the DSTU 8782:2018 standard and our experience of tailoring and ballistic testing. Vartoviy K9 holds Ukraine's first patent for the design of service-dog body armor.
