How to choose a tactical vest for a service dog
A tactical vest (harness) for a service dog is a working tool that the dog wears for 6–10 hours a day, so the main thing when choosing is a durable fabric, reliable fittings and a transport handle that can withstand the weight of the animal. For training, patrolling and search and rescue missions, the optimal base is made of Cordura 500D nylon with 3D Mesh lining, six rows of MOLLE tapes for attaching equipment and accessories from proven manufacturers (Duraflex, ITW Nexus). The Vartoviy K9 tactical harness is designed for dogs weighing 18–60 kg (dimensions S-XL), has ITW Nexus half-rings with a test load of up to 800 kgf and a reinforced transport handle. Unlike body armor, the tactical vest does not contain a ballistic panel — it protects against scratches, branches and fittings, and not from bullets. Below we break down the materials, the MOLLE system, the evacuation mounts and the typical selection errors so that you take a model that is suitable for the workload, and not for walking.
How a tactical vest differs from a bulletproof vest
Before choosing a model, it is important not to confuse two different products. A tactical vest is a nylon platform harness with MOLLE without ballistics, designed to carry gear, training and patrol. Body armor is a separate category with a protective panel.
Ballistic bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" is certified according to the Ukrainian standard DSTU 8782:2018 (class 1): it stops bullets 9×18 mm PM/APS and 9×19 mm Luger and has anti-fragment protection according to STANAG 2920. A tactical vest does not give such protection — and this is normal, because its tasks are different. If you need fire protection specifically, see a detailed comparison of body armor and tactical vest and the ballistic protection category.
Material: Cordura 500D with PU coating
The working standard for service harness is nylon fabric Cordura 500 denier with polyurethane coating. It withstands abrasion against gravel and concrete, does not tear when hooked on branches and absorbs moisture poorly. This is the optimal balance of strength and weight: a thicker fabric adds extra grams and stiffness, and a thinner 600D polyester is wiped off after a few weeks of service load.
What to look for in a fabric description:
- Cordura 500D is the main outer layer (it is used by Vartoviy K9 both in the tactical harness and at the base of the bulletproof vest).
- Triple seams at the main load points, additionally reinforced with a sling.
- 3D Mesh + Eva lining — removes moisture and heat, prevents the strap from rubbing during long work.
Avoid "walking" materials (thin polyester, cotton inserts) — for a dog working 8 hours, they become a source of scuffs and overheating.
MOLLE system: where and how much
The MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) ribbons are a mesh of sewn-in slings that are attached to ID patches, a first aid kit, a flashlight, an GPS tracker, and utility pouches. A quality tactical harness should have at least 6 rows of MOLLE: on the sides of the thoracic compartment and additionally on the back. This is exactly what the "Vartoviy K9" harness has.
Key check — the tapes must be sewn, not glued. Close the loop: if it deforms or moves away — the seam is weak, such a tape will not hold under the weight of the equipment. How to correctly decompose the load according to MOLLE, we have painted in a separate material — the placement of equipment on MOLLE for K9.
Transport handle and evacuation
The most important part of the harness is the reinforced transport handle on the back. Through it, the operator quickly pulls the dog out of the danger zone, lifts it into the vehicle or fixes the animal. The handle must withstand the weight of the dog with a margin of safety.
In the tactical strap "Vartoviy K9", the ITW Nexus half-rings with a test load of up to 800 kgf are responsible for strength — this is a reusable stock even for the largest dog weighing 60 kg. If you are planning an evacuation from a height or ascent, the harness must be compatible with the evacuation belts: see Hoisting two-point belt and paw support belts from the category of transfer and evacuation.
A good handle is sheathed with neoprene — the operator's hand does not slip in the rain and does not rub when held for a long time.
Fittings and fasteners: what to look for
In an official situation, the equipment should be held securely, but if necessary, it should be quickly removed. It's the hardware that decides here, not the Velcro.
- Fastexes Duraflex are the main control locks; reliable, do not crack in the cold.
- ITW Nexus half-rings — power points for fastening belts and evacuation equipment.
- Adjustment at two points (chest girth in front and back) — so that the harness does not move while running.
Only Velcro velcro for the service vest is not suitable: they can decompose while running or cling to the fittings. Power connections should be held on fastexes and half rings.
Size and fit
Tactical harness "Vartoviy K9" is available in sizes S–XL for dogs weighing 18–60 kg. The size is selected by chest circumference and weight — it depends on whether the vest is worn and whether the load from the equipment is evenly distributed.
Separately, it is worth remembering: the tactical harness is a ready-made size range, but the bulletproof vest is sewn individually by standards (there is no table S/M/L). So if you plan to take ballistic protection in the future, take measurements in advance — how to do it correctly is described in the article how to measure a dog for a bulletproof vest.
What you don 'T need IN A tactical vest
- Decorative patches made of thin thread — spoil after a few washes and give extra points of engagement.
- Large metal D-rings in the chest area — injure the dog when falling.
- Reflective tape around the perimeter for combat missions — unmasked in night operations (for rescue missions, on the contrary, it is needed — about this below).
- Exterior carabiners-pockets-get stuck in doors and fences.
When you need not a tactical, but a rescue harness
If your task is to search and rescue on the water or in the mountains, a tactical coyote harness is not suitable: here you need visibility and a power point for lifting. To do this, there is a separate product — a SAR-orange rescue harness with a 3M reflector (visibility up to 80 m), a 5 mm stainless steel D-ring and a test load of 1200 kgf. How to choose between a tactical and rescue model — in the guide there is a choice of a rescue harness.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best material for a tactical dog harness?
The best choice is nylon Cordura 500D with PU coating: it is durable, lightweight and almost does not absorb moisture. This is the same material used in the tactical harness and the base of the "Vartoviy K9" body armor. Thinner polyester is only suitable for walking and not for daily service.
How many rows of MOLLE are needed on a tactical vest?
For service load — at least 6 rows of sewn (not glued) MOLLE tapes: on the sides of the thoracic region and on the back. This is enough to secure the ID patch, first aid kit, flashlight and tracker without overloading one side.
Does the tactical vest protect against bullets?
No. A tactical vest is a nylon harness made of MOLLE without a ballistic panel, it only protects against scratches, branches and fittings. Bullet protection is provided by a separate bulletproof vest certified according to DSTU 8782:2018 (class 1), which stops 9×18 mm PM and 9×19 mm Luger.
How is a tactical harness different from a rescue harness?
Tactical designed for training and patrol: muted colors, MOLLE for equipment. Rescue — for search and rescue: bright SAR orange, 3M reflector, D-ring for lifting and 1200 kgf test load. These are different products for different tasks.
What weight of the dog is the "Vartoviy K9" harness designed for?
The tactical harness is available in S–XL sizes for dogs weighing between 18 and 60 kg. The size is selected by the girth of the chest and the weight of the animal, so that the harness does not rub and evenly holds the equipment.
Is it possible to evacuate the dog through the harness handle?
Yes. The reinforced transport handle and ITW Nexus half-rings with a test load of up to 800 kgf give a multiple margin of safety even for a 60 kg dog. For lifting from a height, the harness is combined with a two-point belt or paw support belts.
