Body armor vs tactical vest: 7 key differences

Body armor and a tactical vest for a service dog are different equipment with different tasks. In short: what is the main difference

Both products look similar — the same base made of Cordura 500D fabric, the same MOLLE ribbons, carrying handle. The difference is hidden inside: there is a ballistic panel in the bulletproof vest, there is no ballistic panel in the tactical vest. Everything else — weight, price, scenario, care — follows from this.

1. Protection: bullet and debris vs friction and scratches

The main difference is the level of threat from which the product protects. The bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" contains a ballistic panel made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, known as UHMWPE in the world). It is a modern fibrous material lighter than older generations of aramid fabrics. The panel is certified according to DSTU 8782:2018, class 1 — Ukrainian ballistic protection standard. According to this class, the product stops the bullets of 9×18 mm PM and APS and 9×19 mm Luger pistols, and also resists fragments and debris (resistance is checked according to the STANAG 2920 method with the determination of the V50 indicator).

The tactical vest does not have a ballistic panel. His task is to be a convenient "unloading" for the dog: to protect the skin from scratches on the rebars, concrete and bushes, evenly distribute the weight of the pouches and give the mounting points. It does not stop the bullet and is not designed to do so.

It is important to understand the limits of protection: the bulletproof vest is designed for pistol cartridges and fragments according to the 1st class of DSTU, and not for rifle bullets. This is a conscious balance of weight and protection for a dog that needs to stay agile.

2. Weight: why it is critical for the dog

For a person, an extra kilogram of equipment is discomfort. For the dog, the weight of the bulletproof vest directly affects endurance, heat transfer, and speed. The Vartoviy K9 body armor weighs 2.4-2.8 kg depending on the size and configuration of the modules — this is a deliberately lightweight design thanks to a panel with UHMWPE instead of heavier materials.

The tactical vest is lighter, because it does not have a ballistic panel — only a fabric base with fasteners remains. Therefore, for long training sessions, patrols and hot weather, many dog handlers choose a tactical vest, and put on a bulletproof vest for a specific task with the risk of shelling. 3. Design and fit: tailoring for size vs size grid

There is a fundamental difference in our approach. The bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" is not a ready-made S/M/L "off the shelf", but a product that is sewn for a specific dog according to the measurements taken. So the ballistic panel fits tightly and does not move during running, does not rub and does not leave unprotected areas. The body armor is modular: separate chest, back with sides, abdomen, optional — removable neck protection module. On the sides there are MOLLE tapes, two carry handles, D-rings for fasteners and Velcro patches/patches. 4. Price: What you pay

A tactical vest is cheaper, because it is mainly fabric, accessories and sewing work. The body armor is more expensive due to the UHMWPE ballistic panel, certification according to DSTU 8782:2018 and individual tailoring for the dog. This is not a "sewn metal vest", but an engineering product with guaranteed characteristics.

6. Care and laundry

The tactical vest is unpretentious: the fabric base can be washed delicately by hand at low temperature with a mild agent and dried in the shade. The body armor requires a more careful attitude: the fabric shell is removed and cleaned separately, and the ballistic panel can not be washed, soaked or dried in the direct sun and near the heaters — this will preserve its characteristics for the entire service life. 7. Warranty and service life

Here it is necessary to distinguish between the manufacturer's warranty and the real service life. Both products "Vartoviy K9" have a warranty of 12 months for sewing and accessories.
