Tactical equipment care: washing, storage, repair
Proper care extends the life of tactical equipment for a dog by 2-3 times: a harness, tactical vest or bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" made of Cordura 500D fabric can be worn for years if you follow a few simple rules. Briefly, the main thing: fabric covers are hand-washed at 30° C with a neutral agent without air conditioning and bleach, dried in the shade; bulletproof vest ballistic panels (UHMWPE according to DSTU 8782:2018) SHOULD NEVER be washed or heated — only ventilated; Duraflex fittings and ITW Nexus half-rings should be inspected every 2-3 months, and carbines with signs of corrosion should be changed immediately. Below is a detailed procedure for washing, storing, checking fasteners and field repairs, as well as answers to frequently asked questions from owners of service and working dogs.
Why care is more important than it seems
High-quality equipment is designed for several years of active operation. But without care, the resource falls at times: the slings are stratified, the threads dry out on ultraviolet, the metal of the fittings is covered with corrosion, and the mold destroys the impregnation of the fabric. The most expensive mistake is to forget the bulletproof vest: the damaged ballistic panel cannot be restored and needs to be replaced.
All Vartoviy K9 products are sewn by a Ukrainian manufacturer with an outer layer of Cordura 500D, so the rules below are the same for the tactical harness, tactical vest, rescue harness and body armor cover. The exception is the ballistic panel itself, which has a separate mode (see the section on bulletproof vest).
Washing the harness and fabric covers
Cordura 500D tolerates hand washing in warm water up to 30°C. Machine is allowed only in a delicate bag, on a delicate program and without spinning. Take a neutral product: liquid soap for delicate fabrics or baby shampoo.
What IS categorically not allowed:
- Chlorine-containing bleach — destroys polyamide filaments and discolors signal colors.
- Laundry conditioners — clog the pores of the fabric, reduce the strength of the sling and nullify water-repellent impregnation (especially critical for a hydrophobic life-saving harness).
- Hot water and hot drying — deform the shape and fastexes.
Before washing, unbutton and shake the sand from the MOLLE sling: the abrasive on the thread acts like sandpaper. Dry in the shade on a horizontal surface. Direct sunlight gradually destroys even UV-resistant threads, so do not leave the equipment to “sunbathe” in the sun for weeks.
| Product | Laundry | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Tactical harness | Manual 30°C, delicate product | Clean the 3D Mesh lining from wool |
| Tactical Vest | Manually 30°C | There is no ballistics — use it like a normal case |
| Rescue harness | Manually, without air conditioning | Preserve hydrophobic impregnation; do not rub st3M deflector |
| Bulletproof vest cover | Manually 30°C after removal of panels | Washing panels are prohibited |
Bulletproof vest: special care rules
"Vartoviy K9" body armor is modular: a textile cover with Cordura 500D and removable ballistic panels with UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, UHMWPE), certified according to DSTU 8782:2018, class 1. The case and panels are cared for in different ways.
Cover — Remove panels and shake as normal harness (manually, 30°C, neutral, shade drying).
Ballistic panels:
- Never rinse, soak in water with powder, boil.
- If the panel is wet in the rain, remove and air dry in the shade, spreading horizontally.
- Do not dry with a hairdryer, on a battery, near a heater or in a car in the sun: UHMWPE is a heat-sensitive material, its protective properties degrade with prolonged heating (approximately from 70-80° C), and the fiber can "float". This is a fundamental difference from aramid (Kevlar) fabrics, so the advice "for Kevlar" cannot be applied to our panels.
- Do not refract the panel in half and do not place under heavy objects — store evenly.

Equipment storage
Optimum conditions: dry room (humidity 40-60%), dark, temperature 5-25° C. What to avoid:
- Plastic bag — without air access, mold appears in 2-3 weeks.
- Balcony in winter — temperature changes give condensation on metal fittings and corrosion.
- Neighborhood with fuel, solvents, batteries — vapors corrode fabric and threads.
A cloth bag or open drawer is best; place a bag of silica gel or activated charcoal next to it to combat moisture. Store the bulletproof vest with removed or evenly nested panels, without creases.
Checking the fittings once every 2-3 months
Dog gear often carries loads on carry handles and evacuation points, so regular inspection of the roofs is important. Check in turn:
- Carabiners and HK-snap — the spring should turn sharply and completely, without hooks and play. Any corrosion is a reason for replacement.
- Duraflex buckles and ITW Nexus half-ring — harness fittings are designed for loads up to 800 kgf, but lose strength when cracked. Inspect the lock body for chips and microcracks, especially in the “tongue” area.
- Transfer Handles and Lift Points — Pull with your hands with moderate effort, checking that the sling and fasteners are not “playing” and the seams are being held. No need to hang weights on the handles — a manual tension check is enough.
- Seams and slings — any loosening of threads, stitching or "exit" of the slings from the buckle — a signal to send the product for repair.
- Reflector and impregnation — on the rescue harness, check if the 3M tape is peeling off and if the water is still rolling dropwise (if it is absorbed, it is time to update the impregnation).
Field and home repairs
Minor damage can be repaired on your own:
- Small rupture of the sling or fabric — seam grip adhesive plus Cordura overlay.
- Broken buckle is a temporary knot made of paracord (parachute cord) until the fittings are replaced.
- Puncture of the cover — temporary sealing with reinforced tape (gorilla tape) holds for washing.
Serious defects — spaced force seams, cracks on key fittings, damage to the ballistic panel — do not "treat" at home. Send us a photo of the damage: in many cases, the manufacturer's repair is cheaper than a new product, and the sewing and accessories are covered by a 12-month warranty (for a ballistic panel — 3 years). Details can be found on the warranty page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to wash the tactical harness in the washing machine?
Yes, but only in a delicate bag, on a delicate program at 30°C and without spinning. The product is neutral, without air conditioning and bleach. It is safer to wash by hand: this way the slings and fastecs last longer.
Is it possible to wash the ballistic panel of the bulletproof vest?
No. The UHMWPE panel cannot be washed, soaked or heated. Wash only the textile cover from the Cordura 500D after removing the panels. Dry the wet panel in the air in the shade horizontally.
Is the Vartoviy K9 bulletproof vest the NIJ IIIA?
No. The NIJ IIIA is an American armor standard that is often cited for comparison. Our body armor is certified according to the Ukrainian standard DSTU 8782:2018 (class 1): it stops bullets 9×18 mm PM/APS and 9×19 mm Luger and has anti-fragment protection according to STANAG 2920. The care of the panel (without heating and washing) is the same regardless of the standard.
How to remove odor and mold from equipment?
Soak the washed cover for 30 minutes in a solution of baking soda (1 tablespoon per liter of water), then rinse thoroughly and dry in the shade. Treat the mold stain with a weak solution of vinegar. To prevent mold from returning, keep equipment dry and not in polyethylene.
How much does tactical equipment serve with proper care?
If you follow the rules of washing, drying and storage, fabric products from Cordura 500D serve several years of active operation. The bulletproof vest ballistic panel has a separate service life and a 3-year warranty; fittings and tailoring have a 12-month warranty.
How to grease carbines and buckles?
After washing and drying, metal snap hooks and half-rings can be lightly treated with silicone spray or dry grease — this protects against corrosion and keeps the ride light. Do not use thick oil: it collects dust and sand.
Caring care is the cheapest way to keep a worker's gear. If choosing a new product, start by disassembling the MOLLE system on a tactical harness or browse the tactical gear category catalog.
