Bulletproof vest for dogs: the complete buyer's guide 2026
A service dog body armor is a certified personal protective equipment, not an accessory. When choosing a model in 2026, focus on three things: the real class of ballistic protection (in Ukraine this is DSTU 8782:2018), the panel material and the exact fit by the standards of your dog. Bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" is certified according to DSTU 8782:2018 (class 1): a ballistic panel of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) stops the bullets of 9×18 mm PM/APS and 9×19 mm Luger pistols and has antifragile protection according to the STANAG 2920 (V50) method. The product is modular (chest, back with sides, abdomen, optional removable neck module), weighs 2.4-2.8 kg, is sewn individually for the size of the dog, and not according to the finished S/M/L mesh. Below is the complete buyer's guide: how to read the protection class, how the panel materials differ, how to choose a fit and what to look for in the kit.
How to read the ballistic protection class
In Ukraine, ballistic protection is regulated by DSTU 8782:2018. The Vartoviy K9 body armor complies with Class 1 of this standard: the UHMWPE panel stops the bullets of the most common pistols — 9×18 mm PM and APS and 9×19 mm Luger (Parabellum). This is the working level for patrol, police and service tasks, where the main threat is short-barreled weapons.
You can often hear about the American scale NIJ (National Institute of Justice) — levels IIa, II, IIIA. This is a separate international standard for the benchmark: the conditional 1st class of DSTU according to the list of pistol threats is close to the lower levels of the NIJ. It is important to understand the main thing: our body armor is certified according to DSTU 8782:2018, and not according to NIJ, and we do not attribute it to someone else's class. Read more about the difference in standards in the article on the ballistic standards of DSTU and NIJ.

Ballistic Panel Material: Why UHMWPE
Modern ballistic panels are made mainly from two groups of materials: aramid fabrics (Kevlar, Twaron) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene — UHMWPE, aka UHMWPE (Dyneema, Spectra are trade names for the same class of material). Critical weight for the dog: the animal wears protection on its back during running, jumping and long work, so every extra 300–400 grams really reduces endurance.
That is why in the bulletproof vest "Vartoviy K9" the panel is made of UHMWPE. This material is lighter than aramid with a comparable level of protection, has natural hydrophobicity (does not gain moisture as much as Kevlar) and holds its shape well. The outer case of the product is a durable fabric Cordura 500D, resistant to abrasion and hooks. The design is protected by a patent of Ukraine.
The finished kit weighs 2.4-2.8 kg depending on the size and set of modules. For the ballistic panel, we give a 3-year warranty, for sewing and fittings — 12 months.
Planting and measurements: why tailoring is individual
The ballistic panel protects only when it fits snugly against the body. If the vest “plays” when moving, the effectiveness of the protection drops sharply, and the panel itself can rub. The anatomy of a dog is more complex than that of a human: deep chest, mobile shoulder blades, the need for free breathing under load. Therefore, we do not sell ready-made mesh sizes S/M/L — each body armor is sewn for a particular dog by the standards.
Before ordering, take the basic measurements:
- chest girth behind the shoulder blades (widest place);
- neck circumference at the base;
- length of the back from the withers to the base of the tail.

Modularity and kit: what to look for
An effective bulletproof vest is not only a panel, but a thoughtful platform. In the model "Vartoviy K9", the protection is modular: it covers the chest, back with sides and abdomen, and a removable neck protection module is added if necessary. This allows you to configure the product for the task — from patrol to assault operations.
- 2 carry handles — quick evacuation of a wounded dog;
- D-rings for securing the leash or evacuation line;
- MOLLE on the sides — pouches, first aid kit, additional equipment;
- velcro patches — identification (K9, Police, AFU, etc.).

Body armor or tactical vest: what to choose
This is most often a question for buyers. Bulletproof vest is needed where there is a real fire or fragmentation threat: combat operations, assault operations, work in the combat zone. Tactical vest without ballistics — for training, patrolling, exercises and everyday service, where the MOLLE platform, evacuation handles and compatibility with equipment, but not bulletproofness, are important.

Care and Duration of Service
The UHMWPE ballistic panel does not like high temperatures and direct pressing under weight. The external cover Cordura is washed separately from the panel, in cool water, without aggressive chemistry and spinning at high speed. It is necessary to store the bulletproof vest horizontally, without crushing the panel. This directly affects the life of the product and the preservation of the 3-year warranty on the panel.

Common Purchase Mistakes
- Buy a "bulletproof vest" without a certificate. Cheap 9×18 capes will not stop — this is protection only from scratches and bites.
- Focus only on other people's standards. In Ukraine, a legally significant class is according to DSTU 8782:2018, and not according to marketing "NIJ" on dubious copies.
- Take the finished size. The panel that does not fit does not protect; the dog's bulletproof vest should be sewn by standards.
- Ignore weight. Excessive weight of the panel reduces the time that the dog is able to work effectively.

Frequently asked questions
What class of protection does the Vartoviy K9 dog body armor have?
The product is certified according to DSTU 8782:2018, class 1. The UHMWPE ballistic panel stops the bullets of the 9×18 mm PM/APS and 9×19 mm Luger pistols and has anti-fragment protection according to the STANAG 2920 (V50) method.
Is it NIJ IIIA?
No. NIJ is an American standard that we mention for comparison purposes only. Our body armor is certified according to the Ukrainian DSTU 8782:2018 (1st class) and we do not assign it the NIJ IIIA class.
What is a ballistic panel made of?
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE). It is a lightweight and hydrophobic material that is well suited to a dog. External cover — Cordura 500D. The design is protected by a patent of Ukraine.
How much does the bulletproof vest weigh and can the dog stand it?
The finished product weighs 2.4-2.8 kg depending on the size and set of modules. Thanks to easy UHMWPE and individual tailoring, it does not overload the animal during prolonged work.
Can I choose the finished size S, M or L?
No, the body armor is sewn individually according to your dog's measurements (chest circumference, neck circumference, back length). So the panel fits tightly and really protects.
What is the warranty and delivery?
Warranty — 12 months for tailoring and fittings and 3 years for the ballistic panel. Delivery in Ukraine by Nova Poshta is free, shipment within 1 business day; abroad — according to the tariffs of operators from ₴850.
